Attrition Warning Detail
How to use the Attrition Warning Detail analysis
This analysis enables you to proactively identify donors who are at risk of lapsing, segment them based on their recent giving history, and prioritize personalized outreach. Drawing from your Gifts and Constituents data, it compiles key statistics for each active donor, including their total lifetime giving, giving in the most recent and previous 36-month periods, the number of gifts, and the months since their last gift. By comparing recent and historical giving, the analysis detects trends such as Growing, Stable, Declining, or New/Reactivated.
A central feature is the risk scoring system, which weighs recency of giving, changes in giving frequency, and shifts in total giving. This composite risk score is used to classify donors into Critical, High, Medium, or Low Risk categories. Recommended actions are tailored accordingly, ranging from urgent personal intervention for top donors at high risk to standard communications for those at low risk. These actionable categories are designed to help you allocate limited stewardship resources where they will have the greatest impact on retention and revenue.
Alongside these classifications, the analysis provides supporting information, such as the average and median recent giving, the average number of months since the last gift, and the average lifetime value for each segment and risk level combination. You can use this supporting data to personalize your outreach, such as referencing past giving milestones or recognizing long-term loyalty, which can deepen engagement and increase the effectiveness of your appeals.
You should review this analysis as part of your team's Constituent Intelligence routines, especially at quarterly planning meetings or before major campaigns. Fundraising directors, donor relations managers, and development officers can utilize these insights to prioritize donor portfolios, design targeted stewardship plans, and effectively monitor the impact of their interventions. Regularly acting on this analysis can help reduce donor attrition, increase renewal rates, and boost overall fundraising performance.
To measure success, track changes in donor retention rates, the reduction of high-risk classifications over time, and improvements in recent giving among previously at-risk segments. You should also monitor the outcomes of specific outreach actions tied to the recommended engagement strategies, adjusting your approach as you see positive shifts in donor behavior.
