Top 100 Donor Concentration

How to use the Top 100 Donor Concentration analysis

This analysis identifies your top 100 donors by total giving in the most recently completed fiscal year. It calculates the proportion of total giving each donor represents, as well as the cumulative percentage as you move down the ranking. It draws on giving data linked to each constituent's unique ID and donor name, factoring in all gifts from living donors during the relevant fiscal year.  For each donor, you see not only their total giving, but also their rank, the percentage of the overall total they represent, and how that percentage accumulates across the top 100.

By providing both the absolute and relative impact of each top donor, this analysis reveals the donor concentration of your organization. You can immediately see if a handful of donors make up a large portion of your fundraising, which is critical for risk assessment and engagement strategy. The inclusion of constituent ID and donor name allows you to easily cross-reference with other Constituent Intelligence sources or personalize stewardship and solicitation plans.

The most important metrics here are the "Total Prior Year Gifts" for each donor, "Percentage of Total," and the "Cumulative Percentage." These show not just who gave the most, but how dependent your fundraising results are on your biggest supporters. A high cumulative percentage in the first few ranks signals a heavy reliance on a small group, which can inform both opportunity and risk management.

Use this analysis to prioritize stewardship of your largest donors, identify prospects for deeper engagement, and identify vulnerabilities in your portfolio. Fundraising directors and major gifts officers are especially encouraged to review this as part of your Constituent Intelligence routines-ideally on a quarterly or annual basis-so you can proactively adjust cultivation, stewardship, and risk mitigation plans. Consider using the donor IDs to link with other engagement or wealth screening data for an even more targeted approach.

To measure the success of applying this analysis, track changes in donor retention among your top 100, growth in cumulative giving, and improvements in diversification (a lower top-10 cumulative percentage over time). Integrating these insights into your regular development meetings will help ensure your fundraising pipeline remains strong, resilient, and responsive to your organization's long-term needs.
