Incremental Lift By Donor Segment

How to use the Incremental Lift By Donor Segment analysis

This analysis enables you to see, month by month, how giving from each donor segment-Top, Middle, and Bottom-has changed in the most recent completed fiscal year compared to the average of the three prior years. It draws on your Gifts data, using constituent IDs, gift dates, and amounts, as well as your organization's segment thresholds, to categorize donors by annual giving level for each of the last four fiscal years. By calculating a three-year monthly baseline and comparing it to actual giving in the previous fiscal year, the analysis reveals the incremental lift (or decline) in giving for each segment and month, expressed both in dollar value and as a percentage.

With this analysis, you gain a clear view into seasonal or campaign-driven shifts in donor behavior within each segment. The key metric, "Incremental Lift (%)", indicates the percentage change in giving compared to the historical average, enabling you to identify which segments are outperforming or underperforming expectations quickly. Understanding these patterns is crucial for making informed decisions, whether you're planning stewardship, appeals, or reallocating resources for acquisition and retention.

Use this analysis to identify periods when giving surged or lagged, and tailor your engagement accordingly. For example, if "Top" donors gave significantly more in a particular month, examine what campaigns or communications drove that lift and consider replicating those strategies. Conversely, if "Middle" or "Bottom" donors dipped below baseline, it may signal a need for re-engagement or a fresh approach. Reviewing this analysis as part of your Constituent Intelligence routines ensures you stay attuned to real-time shifts and can act proactively.

Fundraising directors, development officers, and campaign managers should review this analysis on a monthly or quarterly basis. Use the insights to inform segment-specific outreach, adjust annual fund strategies, and set realistic, data-driven targets for upcoming periods. Success can be measured by tracking increases in incremental lift percentages over time, improved retention within segments, and more effective allocation of staff and budget to areas showing the greatest opportunity or need. By integrating these insights into your Constituent Intelligence practices, you can deepen donor relationships and maximize fundraising outcomes.
